The skinny:
Playing this hyperactive hoops sim is like fast-forwarding your way through a Spike Leedirected Nike commercial while beer-bonging a liter of Jolt cola. In typical "street" fashion, the game rewards you not just for putting the ball through the hoop (or, in the game's lingo, "bringing the rock to the house," aka "the rizzle to the hizzle"), but also for looking Harlem Globetrotters-esque while doing so. Pulling off those fancy-pants dribbles has never been easier due to the new Trick Stick technology. (Just push the right control stick while dribbling and watch your baller perform moves that would make Meadowlark Lemon start whistling "Sweet Georgia Brown.") The game's DJ got on our nerves after about 30 seconds and was easily silenced via the Options screen. And if you're a friendless shut-in, the never-ending Street Challenge mode will give you an excuse to stay indoors with the blinds drawn for months.
Tantalizing tidbit:
The GameCube version features "guest stars" Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, and a special Nintendo court. If this qualifies as "great news" in your book, there's something seriously wrong with you. Seek medical help immediately.
Buy, rent or run away screaming?
Buy. Touch the Trick Stick. Love the Trick Stick.
